The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) recently conducted trial runs for a new ferry service between Vasai and Bhayander, with the aim of boosting tourism and saving time for motorists in the area. The 3.50 km long route by water takes about 15 minutes one way, with a total of 100 passengers and 33 vehicles able to be transported in a single trip. The service will run eight return trips between Vasai and Bhayander, spaced around 90 minutes apart.
While this waterway service is expected to benefit tourists and save time for motorists, regular office-goers may not find much relief from crowded trains and congested roads. The MMB chairman, Manik Gursal, stated that the ship’s route and proper operation will be under review for the next three months before the official inauguration. The ferry service was inaugurated by Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) MP from Thane Rajan Vichare, and waiting rooms have been set up at the piers for those who miss the ferry.
The vessel ‘Janhvi’ operated by Suvarnadurg Shipping and Marine Services Pvt Ltd is expected to provide a new transportation option for residents and visitors in the area. The smooth operation of the ferry and the ease of embarkation of passengers and vehicles from the ship and boats will also be studied for about three months before the official inauguration. Despite the potential benefits of the service, it may not significantly ease the commute for regular office-goers using crowded trains and congested roads.
