India hopes to become the global center of green ship building by 2030, according to Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Introducing the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP), he said the center had set a goal for the first green tugs to be operational in all major ports by 2025.
A major port is under the administrative control of the Union Department of Shipping, while a tugboat (also called a tugboat) is a vessel used to maneuver ships into port berths.
The program will begin with “Green Hybrid Tugs” powered by Green Hybrid Propulsion systems, which will then adopt non-fossil fuel solutions (such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen). “At least 50 percent of all tugs are expected to be converted to green tugs by 2030, which will significantly reduce emissions as the country moves towards sustainable development,” he said.
Sonowal has also inaugurated India’s first Center of Excellence of Green Port & Shipping (NCoEGPS).
An official statement said the NCoEGPS will be the hub of the industry with the goal of making India the global hub for green ship building by 2030.
The NCoEGPS will work on 10 key projects, including developing a regulatory framework for the use of wind energy for marine applications and identifying a suitable biofuel for blending with conventional marine fuels. It will also work towards identifying a fuel cell technology for long-distance shipping and to develop a regulatory framework for the transport of hydrogen up to a pressure of 700 bar.
In addition, the NCoEGPS will produce detailed project reports on low-energy ports and an offshore platform for solar energy development, production, storage and use of green hydrogen.
