The 6th India-Australia Maritime Security Dialogue took place in Canberra on August 13, providing a platform for both sides to address the need for a safe and secure maritime environment conducive to global well-being. Led by Muanpuii Saiawi from India and Sarah Storey and Bernard Philip from Australia, the delegations discussed various topics of mutual interest, including maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief coordination, and sustainable use of marine resources.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation, underpinned by a shared vision for a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. This partnership, solidified through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020, focuses on defense, cybersecurity, and maritime security. Both countries engage in biennial naval exercises and multilateral initiatives to strengthen regional stability and security.
India and Australia also collaborate on capacity-building and HADR efforts in the region, emphasizing the sustainable use of ocean resources through the blue economy. Their joint commitment to upholding international law and promoting peace in the Indo-Pacific highlights the importance of maritime cooperation in fostering global well-being and inclusive growth. The next round of dialogue is set to be held in New Delhi to further strengthen bilateral ties in these crucial areas.
