India achieved a significant milestone in maritime sustainability on 2nd March 2024 with the virtual inauguration of the ‘Ocean Grace’, a state-of-the-art tug, by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. This launch is part of the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) aimed at converting 50% of all tugs into eco-friendly options by 2030, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The ‘Ocean Grace’ features advanced technology like NIGATA main engines and Power Z-Peller ZP Propulsion, showcasing India’s commitment to green maritime practices.
The unveiling of the ‘Ocean Grace’ highlights India’s prowess in indigenous shipbuilding and dedication to maritime sustainability. The country’s focus on advanced technologies and green energy sources not only enhances maritime capabilities but also contributes to global climate change efforts. The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 encompasses plans to reduce emissions, develop technology vessels, and promote sustainable maritime practices.
In addition to the GTTP, India’s Sagarmala Programme in Odisha exemplifies a holistic approach to maritime development, emphasizing infrastructural growth along coastal areas. This program includes initiatives in fisheries, skill development, tourism, and urban water transportation, reinforcing India’s commitment to a sustainable and self-reliant maritime infrastructure. The launch of the ‘Ocean Grace’ signifies a step towards a greener and more self-sufficient maritime sector, showcasing India’s dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship in its waters.
