The Third Working Group meeting on Chabahar Port, involving India, Iran, and Uzbekistan, took place on 22 November 2024 in Mumbai. A delegation from the Afghanistan Chambers of Commerce was also present as a special invitee. The participants highlighted the significance of Chabahar Port in aiding Afghanistan’s reconstruction and economic growth, as well as establishing an alternative trade route to Central Asia. They discussed the escalating transit traffic through the port and explored ways to boost regional connectivity.
Following the meeting, there was an interaction with members of the business community. India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) delivered a presentation on the operations of Shahid Beheshti Terminal at Chabahar Port, showcasing the transit facilities available. Traders showed keen interest in using the port for trade and transit, and were encouraged to provide suggestions for enhancing trade volume and transit flow to maximize the port’s potential. IPGL, through its subsidiary India Ports Global Chabahar Free Zone (IPGCFZ), assumed control of Chabahar Port operations on 24 December 2018. Since then, the port has handled over 450 vessels, 1,34,082 TEUs, and more than 8.7 million tons of bulk cargo, with a notable 1200% increase in container handling during the past financial year.
It was agreed to convene the next edition of the Working Group meeting at a mutually agreed date and location.
