The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) recently completed the 11th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX-2024) off the coast of Kochi on November 28-29, 2024. The exercise focused on enhancing search and rescue capabilities through regional collaboration, showcasing India’s commitment to maritime safety and its proactive role as a global maritime partner. The event featured workshops, seminars, and live-action sea drills to validate and refine search and rescue protocols, with Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh inaugurating the event and ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani overseeing operational reviews.
The two-day exercise saw participation from senior officials from government ministries, armed forces, and industry stakeholders, as well as international delegates from 38 countries, promoting global maritime partnerships. Day 1 emphasized inter-agency collaboration, while Day 2 simulated a large-scale passenger aircraft crash to test India’s ability to execute a coordinated Mass Rescue Operation (MRO). Key actions included deployment of ships, aircraft, and emergency craft from various agencies, as well as innovative rescue techniques like life raft drops and drone-assisted lifebuoy deliveries.
SAREX-2024 validated existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and highlighted best practices for conducting MROs, fostering inter-agency collaboration and improving preparedness for maritime contingencies. The exercise aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), positioning India as a leader in regional maritime safety. The ICG’s robust search and rescue framework enhances safety across Indian waters and the broader Indian Ocean Region (IOR), solidifying India’s reputation as a reliable partner for regional and international maritime safety initiatives.
