Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the maritime sector in India has experienced significant growth and development. According to an official press release, cargo traffic handled by the country’s major ports increased by 3.2 percent annually to reach 68.06 million tonnes (MT) in May of this year. This is an improvement from the 65.94 million tons handled in May 2022.
Based on the data provided by the Indian Ports Association (IPA), the major ports handled a total of 68.06 tons of cargo in May 2023, showing a growth rate of 3.20 percent compared to the same period last year. Among these ports, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) and Kolkata Port, including Haldia, had the highest cargo growth of 10.01 percent year-on-year. They were followed by Visakhapatnam Port at 9.61 percent, Mormugao Port at 9.43 percent, and Port Paradip at 7.77 percent.
Other ports that recorded positive growth in May 2023 compared to the previous year include Paradip Port at 7.77 percent, JNPA at 7.13 percent, Cochin Port at 6.86 percent, New Mangalore Port at 3.88 percent, and Mumbai Port at 0.77 percent. However, some ports experienced negative growth, including Kamarajar, Deendayal, Chennai, and VO Chidambaranar. Kamarajar Port registered the highest decline of 8.75 percent in cargo traffic in the reporting month compared to May 2022.
Overall, the maritime sector in India has made remarkable progress in recent years, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s infrastructure initiatives playing a significant role in driving this growth. The increase in cargo traffic handled by major ports indicates the positive trajectory of India’s maritime sector.
