The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced the implementation of “Harit Sagar” Green Port policies to reduce carbon intensity and develop a green ecosystem in all major ports. These policies include measures such as ship-to-shore power supply, electrification of port equipment, and the use of alternative fuels like green hydrogen, green ammonia, and methanol in port vessels. Additionally, efforts are being made to increase the share of renewable energy in ports. Deendayal Port, Visakhapatnam Port, and New Mangalore Port have been successful in generating excess renewable energy.

Furthermore, the management and reporting of berths/jetties in major ports for chemicals and hazardous substances is carried out in accordance with the Ports Ordinance under the Explosives Act, 1884. The government has also issued Land Management Guidelines (PGLM), 2015 for the optimum utilization of port land. These initiatives are part of the government’s efforts to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure in the country’s major ports.

Overall, the Green Port policies and guidelines aim to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable port infrastructure. The use of alternative fuels, renewable energy, and efficient land management are key components of these initiatives, which are part of the government’s broader efforts to promote green practices and reduce carbon intensity in the shipping and port industry.
