The Government of India has outlined steps to resume operations at the Sittwe-India Port, which has been affected by the ongoing conflict in Arakan State. In an interview, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shared that India is collaborating with Myanmar authorities to ensure the smooth functioning of the port. This initiative is crucial for the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which aims to streamline the transportation of goods to northeastern states through the Kaladan River in Arakan.
The Sittwe India Port, situated in a region controlled by the military junta, plays a vital role in the KMTTP, allowing direct trade between India and Myanmar. The involvement of the Arakan Army (AA) in the area adds complexity to the situation, with stakeholders stressing the importance of engaging with the AA for sustainable port operations. The port, constructed by India in 2009, was fully operational by the end of 2022 and was officially inaugurated on 09 May 2023. The port has already facilitated the delivery of rice to Bangladesh.
Efforts are underway to complete the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, including the construction of infrastructure like ports and highways in Sittwe and Paletwa. India has announced plans to supply electricity from Paletwa to Sittwe as part of the project. However, challenges lie in gaining the cooperation of the Arakan Army, whose presence and influence in the region are acknowledged by analysts. India has even extended an invitation to opposition forces, including the AA, for a federal seminar in New Delhi, recognizing their role in Myanmar’s political landscape.
