The maritime industry is constantly seeking ways to reduce fuel consumption, with a new solution from the towage sector showing promise. This innovation utilizes advanced machine learning algorithms to accurately measure fuel consumption in a cost-effective and efficient manner, applicable to vessels beyond just tugboats. In a time of growing environmental awareness and regulatory demands, precise data measurement is crucial for the industry’s transition towards more sustainable practices.

Traditionally, expensive fuel consumption meters were the only option for accurately measuring fuel usage, but the installation process was costly and time-consuming. LionRock Maritime partnered with Techbinder to develop a more affordable measuring product that is easy to install and offers high accuracy. By using machine-learning algorithms to estimate fuel consumption based on operational context and engine RPM data, the solution has shown great success in predicting fuel usage for tugboats, indicating its potential for wider application within the maritime sector.

The initial trials of the model on a tug from Fairplay Towage in the Port of Rotterdam showed impressive results, with only a 1.8% average deviation from actual fuel measurements. This accuracy is important for operators looking to effectively manage fuel consumption to control costs and reduce environmental impact. As the technology expands and improves, it could have applications beyond tugboats, benefiting a wider range of vessels in the maritime industry and helping companies meet regulatory standards while saving on fuel expenses.
