NYK Line and MTI have collaborated to develop a patent-pending technology for monitoring the transportation of reduced iron on bulk carriers. Reduced iron is gaining interest for its eco-friendly manufacturing process that eliminates the need for coke. As the demand for seaborne transportation grows, proper cargo management is crucial to prevent risks like overheating, fire, and explosions during transit.

The technology utilizes IoT technology to gather real-time environmental data from cargo holds, including temperature, humidity, oxygen, and nitrogen levels. By monitoring these factors remotely, the system helps minimize the risk of cargo damage and reduce the frequency of crew inspections in the holds. This proactive approach aims to prevent accidents, such as falls and suffocation, among seafarers.

Through machine learning algorithms, the system assesses the cargo hold environment during voyages by considering ship specifications, operational data, weather conditions, and initial cargo information. It can recommend specific actions, such as ventilation adjustments, inert gas injection timings, and changes in the ship’s itinerary. Real-time environmental data collected by sensors in the holds can be accessed from shore via satellite communications, ensuring safe operations and quality control both on board and ashore.

The patented technology, jointly developed by NYK, MTI, and NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., offers a comprehensive solution for enhancing safety and efficiency in transporting reduced iron on bulk carriers. By harnessing innovative monitoring capabilities and predictive analytics, the system aims to revolutionize cargo management practices in the maritime industry.
