Last week, Turkish firefighters employed innovative methods to rescue the crew of the ferry Sea Star Tilos at a shipyard in Gialova, Turkey. The ferry, which typically operates between Rhodes and Fethiye, was docked at Altinova Shipyard for repairs when it began to take on water due to adverse weather conditions, leading to its imminent sinking.
In a creative response, the local fire department sent a ladder truck to the scene. They positioned the ladder nearly horizontally over the water, allowing each crew member to climb into a manbasket at the end. The firefighters then retracted the ladder, safely bringing the crew back to shore.
All six crew members were successfully rescued and underwent medical evaluations, with no injuries reported. However, the ferry sank near its mooring, raising concerns about potential pollution in the area.
The Sea Star Tilos is a unique twin-hulled surface effect ship, combining the speed of a hovercraft with the stability of a catamaran, making it a rare vessel in maritime operations.
