Italian prosecutors are investigating the captain of the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily, resulting in the death of British technology magnate Mike Lynch and six others. The captain, James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander, is being investigated for manslaughter and shipwreck. Autopsies cannot proceed until notifications are sent to those under investigation, and it remains uncertain if other crew members will face scrutiny.
The British-flagged yacht, named Bayesian, capsized and sank during a storm, with 22 people on board, resulting in 15 survivors, including Lynch’s wife. The tragic incident has raised questions about multiple manslaughter and negligent shipwreck by the captain, who is ultimately responsible for the vessel and its passengers. Cutfield and the surviving crew members have yet to comment publicly on the disaster.
An architect involved in the yacht’s design speculates that water entered through an open hatch during the storm. Despite being equipped to handle adverse weather conditions, the tragedy has prompted a closer examination of the events leading to the sinking. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
