A crew member of the Vietnamese cargo ship MV Debi attempted suicide at the Paradip port in Odisha, where the ship is currently detained and under investigation for the discovery of cocaine worth Rs 220 crore. The crew member, a Vietnamese national, jumped into the sea after cutting off his right hand, but was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment. The incident has raised concerns about the circumstances leading to the presence of cocaine on the ship and the possible involvement of the crew members in drug smuggling.

The MV Debi arrived at Paradip Harbour from Gresik Harbour in Indonesia, sparking suspicion. Cocaine was found on the ship during a search, leading to the imprisonment of the 21 Vietnamese crew members. It is unclear if the suicide attempt was an effort to escape the situation or a genuine suicide attempt. The Narcotics Control Bureau and customs officials are investigating the circumstances behind the cocaine seizure, and the Kujanga Special Narcotics Court is handling the case.
