Iridium Communications Inc. has launched the Iridium Certus GMDSS service, which represents a major advancement in maritime satellite communications security services. This service, known as the only truly global GMDSS service available, offers distress alert, safety voice, and maritime safety information. Additionally, it includes regulated services such as Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) and Ship Security Alert System (SSAS). These features provide a fast and weather-resistant broadband service, ensuring connectivity for ship operations even in situations where other systems are blocked or unavailable. With Iridium Certus GMDSS, vessels can benefit from a cost-effective and high-performance connectivity solution essential for any hybrid network system.
Iridium Certus terminals now provide GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS capabilities through a single antenna, offering fleets the opportunity to reduce data costs and optimize their onboard communication equipment. Notably, the Lars Thrane LT-4200S has received the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) certification, with other leading equipment manufacturers like Cobham Satcom, Intellian, and Thales expected to introduce a range of Iridium Certus 700 and 200 GMDSS solutions in the near future. The Iridium Certus GMDSS service not only ensures global coverage for maritime security but also offers broadband and mid-band voice and data services, allowing mariners to tailor their communication needs based on their specific requirements.
With Iridium Certus GMDSS being the only satellite security solution available across all oceans worldwide, mariners can now benefit from a comprehensive and reliable communication system for their vessels. Iridium CEO Matt Desch expressed excitement about offering seafarers a comprehensive service that not only meets industry safety standards but also streamlines their onboard communication needs. Compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirement for GMDSS equipment installation on SOLAS class ships is essential. In emergency situations, crews can quickly notify a Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) using the red DISTRESS button on an Iridium GMDSS terminal, ensuring rapid response and accurate communication of the emergency situation. The integration of GMDSS, LRIT, and SSAS with other broadband services provides enhanced security and cost savings for a ship’s communication system.
