The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has developed a free guide to help job-seeking yacht crew find jobs safely. The guide, titled ‘Personal safety precautions for job-seeking yacht crew,’ aims to increase crew’s awareness of potential risks while looking for their next role. ISWAN created the guide in response to an increase in calls to their 24-hour help line, Yacht Crew Help, from crew members experiencing personal safety issues such as bullying, harassment, and sexual violence. Many of these crew members found their roles through unregulated measures, such as social media.

The guide is available for crew members of any gender, nationality, or level of experience in the industry. It provides information on finding reputable agencies, practicing safe dock-walking, and what to check before embarking. It also covers personal safety while on board, what to do in the case of an incident, and which organizations to contact for support. Multiple organizations, including Nautilus International and MHG Insurance, contributed their knowledge and expertise to develop the guide.

‘Personal safety precautions for job-seeking yacht crew’ can be downloaded for free from the ISWAN and Yacht Crew Help websites, as well as the ISWAN Seafarers app. Yacht Crew Help is available 24/7 for crew members in need of support or someone to speak to.
