The Kerala Maritime Board has made significant developments at ports along the coast such as Kollam, Beypore, Azhikkal, and Vizhinjam by setting up jetties and cranes for cargo handling. Plans are in place to increase the draught at Beypore port to 5.5 meters initially and 8 meters in the final phase, with an allocated budget of Rs 11.8 crore for the project.
As part of the Sagarmala program, a 101-meter-long berth has been constructed at Kollam port, which is also set to receive the status of an integrated check post. Additionally, the Centre for Management Studies will conduct a preliminary study and prepare a detailed project report for the building of a multi-purpose berth at Ponnani Port to further enhance port facilities in the region.
Moreover, security measures and ancillary facilities are being implemented at smaller ports to meet the requirements for obtaining the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code. These developments aim to boost maritime infrastructure, improve cargo handling capabilities, and enhance security at ports in Kerala, facilitating smoother and more efficient operations along the coast.
