HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediate holding company for HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding and offshore businesses, showcased its latest developments in ammonia-fueled vessel technology at the Global Tech Forum in Athens, Greece. The event attracted over 100 attendees from the global shipbuilding and maritime industry, where the Korean vessel manufacturer introduced its integrated scrubber technology to minimize toxic gas emissions from ammonia fuel. Despite being eco-friendly with zero carbon emissions, managing the toxicity of ammonia has been a challenge.
Industry leaders such as Euronova, Thenamaris, and NYK expressed interest in solutions for ammonia leakage, a significant obstacle in the commercialization of ammonia as a fuel. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering’s new technology addresses these concerns with a dual-stage absorption system that reduces ammonia emissions to nearly zero. Additionally, the company’s innovative exhaust outlet design enhances onboard safety by positioning outlets away from crew areas.
In addition to the ammonia-fueled vessel technology, the company presented its artificial intelligence solution for ship management and a remote drone system at the forum. These solutions can detect even minor leakages in real time, contributing to accident prevention. Park Seung-yong, president and chief operating officer at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, emphasized the company’s leadership in the future of shipbuilding. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will also participate in Posidonia 2024, one of the world’s top three shipbuilding and maritime exhibitions, to showcase eco-friendly technologies aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 goals.
