In 2023, sales of biofuels and liquefied natural gas (LNG) reached a total of 51.82 million tonnes, according to data from the Singapore Maritime and Ports Authority. This surpassed the previous record of 50.6 million tons in 2017. Container throughput also reached a record high of 39.01 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU), exceeding the previous record of 37.6 million in 2021. The total volume of cargo handled in 2023 also increased to 591.70 million tons, up from 578.22 million in 2022. Additionally, ship arrival tonnage exceeded 3 billion gross tonnage (GT) for the first time.
The MPA reported that biofuel blend bunker sales reached 520,000 tonnes in 2023, significantly higher than the 140,000 tonnes in 2022. Similarly, LNG bunker sales rose to 110,000 tonnes from 16,000 in 2022. This data indicates a significant increase in the use and sales of biofuels and LNG as alternative fuel sources in the maritime industry. The record-breaking sales and throughput reflect a strong and growing maritime industry in Singapore.
