Maersk announced the transformation of its warehouse at the Container Freight Station in Ponneri, Chennai into a women-operated facility as part of the station’s 15th-anniversary celebrations. This move demonstrates Maersk’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, aligning with India’s goal of providing equal job opportunities for women even in traditionally male-dominated sectors. The warehouse will now have women employed in various operational roles, increasing female representation from 3% to 13% of the total workforce.
Christopher Cook, Managing Director of Maersk South Asia, emphasized that this transformation aims to set new standards in the logistics industry and challenge the status quo. Following the success of their first women-operated warehouse in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, Maersk is confident that this initiative will enhance operational excellence and create meaningful employment opportunities for women in Chennai’s logistics sector. The company has provided comprehensive training programs to ensure the success of the women employed in the warehouse.
To mark the 15th anniversary and the launch of the all-women-operated shift at the warehouse, Maersk donated laptops to the Government Higher Secondary School near Ponneri, where their operations are based. This initiative reflects Maersk’s commitment to giving back to the community. As Maersk celebrates a century-long presence in India, their dedication to Tamil Nadu goes beyond business operations, employing over 3,000 professionals in their Global Service Centre and partnering with institutions to train the next generation of seafarers.
