The container ship Shiling, which lost power and steering off the coast of New Zealand last week, will be towed to Wellington by deep-sea tug Scandi Emerald, according to Maritime New Zealand. Shiling, registered in Singapore, has a capacity of 5,028 TEU and 24 crew members. The exact timing of the vessel’s movement has yet to be confirmed. Maritime NZ oversees the process to ensure safety.
Shiling lost power and steering about 22 nautical miles north-northwest of Farewell Spit on 12 May. The ship’s collapse follows a previous power failure on 15 April that forced the vessel to Wellington for repair. Though decisions on towing, anchoring and passage are the responsibility of Shiling’s owners, with the towing costs managed by them and their insurers, Maritime NZ is actively monitoring the situation to ensure safety.
