The Diversity Study Group (DSG) recently published its fifth annual review, shedding light on the effectiveness of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies within the maritime industry. Based on surveys of over 3,000 shore-based employees and 3,300 seafarers, the study shows progress in creating inclusive workplaces but also highlights ongoing challenges. CEO Heidi Heseltine emphasized the importance of inclusive company culture, stating that it is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage for safety, operational excellence, and workforce engagement.
While global DEI policies are widely implemented, the study reveals that their success hinges on localized execution. Respondents emphasized the need for managers to understand diverse employee needs and ensure that DEI practices address specific workplace dynamics. Key areas such as management accountability and tailored inclusivity efforts are crucial in fostering employee connection and trust. Despite a decrease in the proportion of women shore-based employees, overall feedback from most workforce segments is positive. However, women and individuals with disabilities reported slightly lower satisfaction levels, with women seafarers facing challenges like psychological and sexual harassment.
The data suggests a clear roadmap for companies to enhance localized efforts, address barriers for marginalized groups, and provide stronger support for psychological safety. By doing so, the maritime industry can ensure that its DEI initiatives have a lasting impact and instill confidence in its workforce.
