South African authorities are searching for missing charter boat captain John Matambu and his passenger after their vessel was found burned and abandoned on a beach in Mozambique. The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm when the pair did not return to Sodwana Bay as expected. The charred wreck of Matambu’s boat, Magnum Too, was discovered in Mozambique, with no sign of the men.
The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Matambu and his passenger are unclear, but some indications suggest foul play may be involved. The man who hired Matambu provided false contact details and only he boarded the boat, despite booking for his wife and child as well. Authorities are investigating all possibilities and hope that foul play was not a factor in the disappearance.
The NSRI, Police Sea Borderline Control agency, and Police Search and Rescue unit are all involved in the search for Matambu and his passenger. Matambu is described as a well-known and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay. The discovery of the burned boat in Mozambique has added complexity to the search efforts.
