The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported on Friday that a well-marked low over the Bay of Bengal has developed into a depression over the east central Bay. The depression is expected to intensify and move northeastward, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 40-50 kph near the centre. As a result, maritime ports in the region have been advised to hoist distant cautionary signal no-1.
At 6 am on Friday, the depression was located approximately 870 km south-southwest of Chattogram port. Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay and deep sea have been warned to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution. The Indian Meteorological Department has also forecasted that the system could develop into a severe cyclonic storm and potentially impact West Bengal or Bangladesh’s coast on Sunday evening.
The storm has been named ‘Remal’, an Arabic word meaning sand, by Oman. With the potential for further intensification and adverse weather conditions, precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of those in the region, including fishermen and residents along the coast.
