The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has praised President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s approval of the 10-year Maritime Industry Development Plan 2028, calling it a strategic move that demonstrates the Philippine government’s commitment to maximizing the potential of the maritime industry for national development. The plan, signed into effect on February 8, 2024, aims to create a strong and reliable Philippine merchant fleet to meet sea transport needs, expand domestic and overseas shipping industries, and promote a skilled maritime workforce. Marina Administrator Sonia Malaluan expressed gratitude to Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista for his support in developing and updating the plan.
In addition to focusing on enhancing the Philippine Merchant Fleet and promoting a skilled maritime workforce, the plan also includes measures to modernize and expand the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, enhance maritime transport safety and security, and promote environmental sustainability. Malaluan emphasized that these initiatives will not only drive the growth of the maritime sector but also contribute to the overall welfare of citizens and the protection of marine resources. Marina is committed to collaborating with relevant government agencies, the private sector, and other stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the plan.
