MHSS Raises Concerns about Indian Seafarers’ Loneliness

German maritime specialist Mental Health Support Solutions (MHSS) has observed an increase in Indian seafarers reaching out for mental health support. The company is particularly concerned about high levels of loneliness and isolation experienced by these crew members, especially when cultural differences are not properly addressed on vessels. Clinical psychologist Julia Oppermann explained that factors like the threat of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea may have worsened these issues, which have always been challenging for Indian nationals. The absence of communal dining experiences at sea can also contribute to feelings of disconnection and emotional distress among Indian seafarers.

The company is unsure whether these challenges are solely due to the geopolitical situation or if seafarers are now more willing to discuss their mental health struggles, or a combination of both. Julia Oppermann emphasized the importance of supporting Indian seafarers during the transition from life at sea to family life. MHSS CEO Charles Watkins highlighted that India is now the fourth-largest supplier of crew and stressed the need for the maritime industry to address cultural differences and understand the unique challenges faced by Indian seafarers in order to create a more supportive and inclusive environment on vessels.
