Port Milwaukee is preparing to welcome the Viking Octantis, the first cruise ship for the 2023 season. This will kick off the summer season, with 31 scheduled port calls by various cruise lines and an expected 12,000 passengers visiting the city. The Viking operated ship can carry up to 378 passengers and is the second season Milwaukee has been designated as the port of departure and disembarkation. Viking will also introduce a second ship, the Viking Polaris, to the Great Lakes in 2023, allowing for more recreational tourism opportunities in Milwaukee.

The 2022 Milwaukee Great Lakes cruise season returned with momentum after pandemic-related cancellations, welcoming an unprecedented number of international passengers and cruise ships to Milwaukee. The Viking Octantis is scheduled to arrive at the Port’s City Heavy Lift Dock followed by a press conference celebrating the arrival of the first cruise ship of 2023. The welcome event will be attended by Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Councilwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, and local leaders. The port is an economic body governed by the seven-member Board of Harbor Commissioners, appointed by the mayor and endorsed by the common council, promoting shipping and trade in the region by providing access to domestic and international shipping, rail, and road transportation.
