Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has teamed up with several industry partners to conduct a study on the potential benefits of producing biomethane from cow dung. The project aims to utilize dung from the dairy industry in Hamanaka, Hokkaido, as a source for industry and shipping fuel. MOL highlights the attractiveness of biomethane due to its compatibility with existing gas infrastructure and transportation systems.
According to the European Biogas Association, utilizing manure from livestock farming for biogas production can have significant positive impacts on the environment and economy. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels, improving air, soil, and water quality through enhanced manure management practices, and providing additional income opportunities for farmers. The partners involved in this initiative include Hamanaka Town, JA Hamanaka, Takanashi Milk Products, Hokkaido Gas Co., and MOL Sunflower.
By exploring the potential of biomethane production from cow dung, MOL and its partners are aiming to contribute to sustainable practices in the dairy industry while also addressing environmental concerns. This study aligns with efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote cleaner energy sources. Additionally, the project has the potential to create new income streams for farmers and improve overall waste management practices in the region.
