Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into a partnership with Sofar Ocean to implement the Wayfinder voyage optimization platform across its fleet. This initiative is designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.
The Wayfinder platform utilizes real-time weather data gathered from Sofar’s global network of Spotter buoys, which monitor various oceanographic parameters, including wave patterns, wind speeds, sea surface temperatures, and atmospheric pressure. By leveraging this information, Wayfinder offers vessels optimal speed and routing recommendations, thereby maximizing fuel efficiency.
A recent trial involving 40 of MOL’s ships revealed a significant average reduction of 6% in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions per voyage. Encouraged by these results, MOL has decided to expand the technology’s deployment across its entire fleet. The shipping giant is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and aims to cut emissions intensity by 45% by 2035 compared to 2019 levels.
