The MPA (Mormugao Port Trust) chairman and other officials recently visited the ship “MV August Oldendorff” docked at berth No. 5 to discuss their plans for promoting environment-friendly ships in the port. The officials presented a souvenir to the ship’s captain and chief engineer during the visit. MPA Chairman Dr. N. Vinodkumar stated that the port aims to bring in eco-friendly ships and mentioned the Harit Sagar scheme, which grants discounts to such ships according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways guidelines. The MPA has developed an initiative that reviews the Environment Sensitivity Index (ESI) values of ships, with scores above 30 qualifying for discounts in most ports. The ship “MV August Oldendorff” is the first ship with a high ESI score under the Green Credit Harit Shreya Scheme, and the program will be launched for all ships throughout the year.

Dr. Vinodkumar highlighted that the “MV August Oldendorff” has an excellent ESI value of 41, indicating low emissions of greenhouse gases. As part of their effort to attract more environmentally friendly ships, the MPA will assess whether the discounts provided are sufficient. They also stressed the importance of collecting ESI score data for all ships calling at the port to ensure that more eco-friendly vessels are encouraged to use the port.
