Representatives from the five Maritime Technologies Cooperation Centres (MTCCs) gathered at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) this week to formalize a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for inter-MTCC cooperation. This agreement, inked during IMO’s Technical Committee meeting, aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and accelerate the adoption of decarbonization technologies in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Pacific regions.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Jose Matheickal of IMO emphasized the significance of collaboration among the five MTCCs in bridging the knowledge and technology gaps between the global north and global south. These MTCCs, designated as centres of excellence in their respective regions, focus on technical cooperation, capacity building, and technology transfer with support from IMO and the European Union.
The MTCCs play a crucial role in improving compliance with international energy-efficiency regulations, assisting countries in developing national energy-efficiency policies for their maritime sectors, promoting the adoption of low-carbon technologies in maritime transport, and establishing pilot data-collection systems to contribute to global regulatory processes. The signatories of the MoU include representatives from MTCC Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Pacific.
