PSA Mumbai, part of the global port operator group PSA, has made history by becoming India’s first 100% renewable energy container terminal. The commissioning of a 7.8 MW solar farm with O2 Power is a major milestone in the terminal’s journey to reduce emissions. The solar farm will be expanded to 10 MW by June 2024 and is expected to meet over 75% of PSA Mumbai’s power needs. The remaining renewable power will be sourced from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited and other suppliers, leading to a reduction of 16,000 tonnes per year in CO2 equivalent emissions.
O2 Power, a renewable energy platform in India, has developed the solar farm in Beed, Maharashtra, and will manage it with an expansion facility in Motala, Maharashtra. PSA Mumbai aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, with initiatives including electrification of its equipment fleet and the upcoming launch of electric trucks by PSA BDP in early 2024. The partnership with O2 Power is seen as a unique marketplace solution and underlines PSA’s commitment to green transport initiatives.
The CEO of PSA Mumbai expressed satisfaction at the achievement and highlighted the importance of environmentally friendly transport solutions. The terminal also looks forward to contributing its part to JNPA’s target of 60% renewable energy use under the Maritime India Vision 2030, with plans to expand the partnership with O2 Power. PSA Mumbai is located at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra, India’s largest container port, and is undergoing development to accommodate super post-Panamax vessels.
