The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) has proposed two new amendments, which are now open for consultation. The MLC sets international standards for the living and working conditions of seafarers and is regularly reviewed and updated. The latest changes, proposed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), aim to address lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes the importance of seafarers being able to stay connected with friends and family through social media and messaging apps while at sea.

One of the proposed amendments focuses on the health of seafarers, emphasizing the need for a ‘balanced’ diet. This requirement aims to ensure that seafarers have access to a variety of meals that include carbohydrates, protein, fat, fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, the amendments include regulations to provide seafarers with information on how to protect themselves from financial loss and clarify financial accountability for vessels. The consultation on these proposed changes is now open for feedback.

Oliver Mallinson, Head of Seafarer Safety and Health at MCA, emphasized the importance of ensuring that seafarers’ living and working conditions meet certain standards. He highlighted the evolving needs of seafarers and expressed hope that the proposed amendments would improve seafarers’ ability to connect with loved ones and support their health while onboard. The consultation on the MLC amendments will run for six weeks, ending on January 22.
