A new agreement has been established between the National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) and the National St John Ambulance (NStJA) in Papua New Guinea to improve response times, coordination, and overall effectiveness in maritime safety incidents. Key initiatives under the agreement include developing a joint database of trained personnel and assets, creating an advanced seafarer first aid course, and facilitating NStJA’s access to NMSA vessels for emergency medical responses. Both organizations have expressed the importance of the partnership in enhancing their ability to safeguard lives at sea and provide a more robust and efficient response to maritime emergencies.

NMSA’s General Manager/CEO, Paul M. Unas, highlighted the significance of the partnership, emphasizing that the collaboration will help ensure a more effective response to maritime incidents. NStJA’s Chief Executive, Matthew Cannon OStJ, also noted the importance of the collaboration in not only enhancing emergency response capabilities but also promoting public awareness and education on maritime safety. Provisions under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) include joint public awareness campaigns, training plans, and contingency plans for various maritime incidents.

The partnership between NMSA and NStJA signifies a significant milestone in enhancing maritime safety in Papua New Guinea. The agreement aims to leverage the expertise and resources of both organizations to deliver vital services to those in need.
