The Kochi Water Metro, the first of its kind in India, was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The metro connects 10 islands around the city on the Malabar coast using battery-operated electric hybrid boats. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will soon start the service in Ayodhya and in the Parliamentary constituency of PM Modi, with an expected arrival in Ayodhya around January 14 next year. It is likely that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Water Metro service in Ayodhya on January 22 during the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla.

The Water Metro service between Guptar Ghat and Naya Ghat is expected to enhance religious tourism in the city. This project has already seen the arrival of two jetties from Kolkata in Ayodhya. During the inauguration of the Water Metro, CM Pinarayi Vijayan of Kochi mentioned that it will bring a significant revolution in water transportation and in boosting the tourism of the state. Funded by the Kerala government and the German firm KfW, the boats for the metro are manufactured at Cochin Shipyard Limited.
