Carnival Cruise Line crew members have been detained aboard the Carnival Sunshine while docked in Norfolk, Virginia, as reported by the Pilipino Workers Center and local media. The detentions, which began in April, have involved 21 crew members accused of child pornography, with the latest incident occurring on July 20. Aquilina Soriano Versoza, executive director of the advocacy group, criticized the actions as unjustified deportations of hardworking migrants.
In response, Carnival Cruise Line stated that the situation is a law enforcement matter affecting the cruise industry for several years. The company emphasized its cooperation with investigations and highlighted ongoing training programs to ensure crew members adhere to internet safety guidelines.
On July 20, the Pilipino Workers Center organized a rally in Norfolk, where demonstrators expressed their discontent with Carnival’s handling of the situation. Soriano Versoza noted that the detained workers have not been charged with any crimes and possess valid work visas.
Additionally, crew members have been removed from at least five cruise ships on the Great Lakes, including vessels from Viking Octantis, Victory Cruise Lines, and Pearl Seas Cruises.
