A cruise ship, capable of accommodating over 2,500 passengers, currently sits silently in Abu Dhabi, awaiting resolution in the Middle East. With all passengers evacuated, only 59 crew members remain on board to maintain operations. The vessel, Mein Schiff 4, operated by TUI Cruises, is one of several major ships stranded in the Persian Gulf due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz from regional conflict.
Recent reports indicate that TUI Cruises has drastically reduced the crew on Mein Schiff 4 from the usual 1,000 to a mere 59, reflecting a 95% decrease. This skeleton crew is primarily composed of essential nautical and technical staff, led by Captain Jan Fortun, who are prepared to navigate the ship as soon as it is safe to do so. The ship is currently classified as “temporarily laid up” in the Abu Dhabi cruise port.
Following a large-scale evacuation, TUI Group confirmed the repatriation of nearly 10,000 guests and around 1,500 crew members from the affected ships. As the conflict persists, at least five other major cruise ships remain trapped in nearby ports, facing similar uncertainties. Until conditions improve, the remaining crew must manage critical systems on the ship, ensuring it is ready to depart when possible.
