MSC Group is advancing its luxury cruise ship fleet amid the booming high-end cruise market. Fincantieri recently completed the float out of MSC’s Explora Journeys’ third ship, with construction ongoing for the fourth and fifth vessels, part of a planned six-ship series by 2028. The initiative began in 2019, targeting the ultra-luxury segment after successfully expanding MSC Cruises for the broader market.
The first ship, Explora I, launched in 2023, followed by Explora II in 2024. Each ship, weighing around 63,900 gross tons, features all-suite accommodations, five pools, and six restaurants, inspired by Mediterranean yacht cruising. MSC plans to invest approximately $3.7 billion in this luxury endeavor.
Recent updates include a shift to LNG as the primary fuel starting with Explora III, which is set for delivery in summer 2026. The design of the next two ships has been extended to accommodate new propulsion systems. Additionally, Explora V and Explora VI, scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028, will incorporate advanced liquefied natural gas engines and a liquid hydrogen system for zero emissions while docked.
As the ultra-luxury cruise segment flourishes, Fincantieri is also constructing vessels for other high-end brands, reflecting a broader trend in luxury travel.
