Viking Cruises plans to capitalize on the tourism potential of the Brahmaputra River with the introduction of its new ship, Viking Brahmaputra, set to launch by the end of 2027. Developed by Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kolkata, this initiative highlights the increasing global interest and investment in India’s waterway tourism, as noted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has enhanced river cruise operations by developing onshore and offshore terminals, ensuring proper waterway depth, and providing 24/7 navigation aids and pilot services. These improvements have boosted passenger comfort and trust, driving rapid sector growth.
In January 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated MV Ganga Vilas, which completed the world’s longest river cruise, spanning 3,200 km across five Indian states and Bangladesh, securing a place in the Limca Book of Records. Popular cruise circuits, including the Sundarbans, Brahmaputra, and Kerala’s backwaters, continue to attract both domestic and international travelers.
To further expand this sector, IWAI aims to develop 51 new river cruise circuits across 47 national waterways by 2027. The Cruise Bharat mission seeks to triple river cruise passengers and enhance infrastructure, promote eco-friendly tourism, and create new job opportunities in the industry.
