A tragic incident occurred at a marine engineering institute in Pune, where a 20-year-old cadet, Vishal Verma, lost his life after a basketball backboard fell on him during a morning workout. The second-year student at Tolani Maritime Institute was performing pull-ups when the structure collapsed, leading to severe head injuries. Despite immediate assistance from fellow students and staff, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. This event has sparked serious concerns regarding safety standards and the maintenance of sports equipment in educational institutions.
Vishal, originally from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, had enrolled in a four-year B.Tech program that was set to conclude in 2028. Dr. Sanjeet Kanungo, the principal of the institute, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and stated that an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse. The police are also looking into the matter, examining whether the equipment was rusted or improperly fitted, and have registered a case.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, as it follows the death of a 16-year-old national-level basketball player in Rohtak just five months prior when a pole collapsed during practice. Another similar case involved a 15-year-old in Bahadurgarh, raising alarms about the safety of sports facilities in schools and colleges.
