On Kartik Purnima, the air in Odisha is filled with festive enthusiasm as devotees engage in the traditional Boita Bandana ritual, celebrating the state’s rich maritime heritage. Early in the morning, people flock to rivers and ponds, launching small boats made from banana bark, decorated with lamps, incense, betel leaves, and areca nuts. The resonant chants of “Aa Ka Ma Bai…” echo throughout the state, enhancing the spiritual ambiance.
Prominent locations like Puri beach, Chandrabhaga coast, Bindusagar tank in Bhubaneswar, and Gadagadia ghat in Cuttack witnessed large crowds as thousands participated in prayers and rituals after taking holy dips. This day not only commemorates the ancient maritime traditions of Odisha but also marks the end of the sacred Kartik month, believed to bestow good fortune and spiritual merit upon those who partake in the Boita Bandana.
Legend has it that on this day, Odia sailors, known as Sadhabas, embarked on long voyages for trade, while their wives, the Sadhabanis, prayed for their safe return. Thus, floating boats symbolizes a tribute to Odisha’s illustrious maritime history. The festival brings together the community in a celebration of cultural pride and unity.
Wishes from prominent figures, including Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, highlight the significance of this occasion, emphasizing the rich cultural heritage and the blessings of Lord Jagannath for prosperity and peace.
