Svitzer has entered into a shipbuilding agreement with Cochin Shipyard (CSL) to construct four battery-electric TRAnsverse 2600e tugs, the first of this next-generation design to be built in India. The contract includes options for four additional vessels, all tailored to Svitzer’s specifications at CSL’s Cochin facilities, supporting the company’s global fleet renewal program.

The TRAnsverse design is a multi-role tug optimized for complex harbor operations, touted as one of the most efficient towage platforms globally. This collaboration not only utilizes CSL’s shipbuilding expertise but also aligns with India’s goals to become a global maritime manufacturing hub under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Make in India initiative.

The fully electric TRAnsverse 2600e will operate with zero direct emissions when charged from green energy sources. Its innovative design features, such as a patented staple arrangement and omni-directional propulsion, enhance operational capabilities by up to 50%. Construction is expected to begin soon, with initial deliveries planned for late 2027 or early 2028, depending on regulatory approvals and shipyard scheduling.

Svitzer’s Chief Operating Officer, Kasper Karlsen, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting green transitions and decarbonization in port operations through this partnership with CSL.
