A cultural extravaganza titled “Bharat and Bharatiyata” was presented by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations at the Prabasi Bharatiya Divas. Artists from various regions showcased folk and classical dances, highlighting India’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. The performance depicted the country’s history, from the ancient Indus Valley Civilization to the present day, emphasizing India’s spiritual and material contributions to the world.
The show unfolded on a giant ship, symbolizing the struggles of Girmitiyas in foreign lands through dynamic Chhau and contemporary dance movements. Classical Kuchipudi dance portrayed the Sindhu-Saraswati civilization, maritime trade, and cultural connections, with references to the Ramayana and Buddha’s spiritual journey. The fusion of classical Tarana music and various dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, and Kuchipudi mesmerized the audience, showcasing India’s diverse traditions.
The performance also paid tribute to India’s maritime history, with merchants and traders sailing from ancient Harappan times to modern eras. Folk dances from states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Punjab added color and vibrancy to the show. The grand finale featured 110 dancers holding earthen Diyas, symbolizing peace and prosperity, while celebrating modern India’s progress in the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. The storytelling was enhanced by a visual LED backdrop and a voice narrative by Maitreyee Pahari.
