Germany’s Steelpaint has made a significant return to the Indian market after over 16 years by delivering its Stelcatec corrosion-resistant coating system for trial applications on cranes at the Port of Chennai. This move comes as part of a strategic partnership with Kaptel Overseas, a New Delhi-based company that has operated in India since 1993. The trial, which begins this month, will involve the application of Stelcatec LPR primer and Stelcatec LTC topcoat on rubber-tyred gantry and ship-to-shore cranes.

Steelpaint Director Frank Müller emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing the successful track record of Stelcatec in Europe’s seaports. He believes the system can extend asset life and lower maintenance costs for operators in India, where harsh environmental conditions pose challenges. The market’s sensitivity to pricing is acknowledged, but Müller views high-performance coatings as an investment that can lead to reduced downtime and increased operational efficiency.

Kaptel’s CEO Nishanth Maliyekkal highlighted India’s focus on modernizing its maritime sector through significant investments and projects like the Vizhinjam International Seaport. Steelpaint’s re-entry coincides with its participation in INMEX India, signaling a commitment to engage with key stakeholders in the region. A successful trial in Chennai could pave the way for further opportunities across India’s ports and ship repair sectors.
