The Central Government, in collaboration with the State Government of Goa, is working towards developing Goa as a prominent cargo and cruise destination. As part of the Sagarmala scheme, the development of an international and domestic cruise terminal, as well as a ferry terminal, has been initiated in the region.
The central government has allocated Rs. 101.72 crores for the construction of an international and domestic cruise terminal and a ferry terminal at Mormugao Port in Goa, with an expected completion date of March 2025. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is also working on Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for nine coastal jetties in Goa to enhance cargo handling capacity, alleviate traffic congestion, and enhance inland transportation.
The development of these terminals and the implementation of the Coastal Shipping Subsidy Scheme are expected to generate employment opportunities in transportation, hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors, boosting revenues for local businesses. Additionally, improved connectivity through enhanced inland waterway services, including ferry and roll-on/roll-off (RORO) services, will be facilitated through integrated cruise routes.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, shared this information in a written response in the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing Goa as a key cargo and cruise hub. The initiatives aim to not only drive economic growth but also enhance local connectivity and promote maritime activities in the region.
