The port department’s captain plans to develop a master plan for Goa’s 105 km of coastal and river networks, focusing on enhancing maritime freight transport and passenger movement. This comprehensive strategy will outline short-, medium-, and long-term objectives and is deemed essential for improving small port infrastructure and increasing capacity along national waterways.
Officials indicate that the plan will examine potential private investments and central funding to support infrastructure upgrades and services, aiming to create new revenue streams for the department. A civil servant emphasized the importance of adhering to federal guidelines for ports and waterways, with goals centered on infrastructure development, economic growth, and environmental protection.
A consultant is likely to be appointed to assist in crafting and implementing the master plan once cabinet approval is secured. The entire process is expected to take around 10-12 months, involving a detailed assessment of existing infrastructure, navigable waterways, and stakeholder interests.
This initiative aligns with the central government’s focus on coastal development under initiatives like the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Blue Economy Vision for 2047.
