Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) is set to establish a greenfield shipbuilding facility outside Kolkata in response to increasing demand in the defense and commercial sectors both domestically and internationally. The company has enhanced its capacity to build 24 ships simultaneously, up from 20, as of 2024. Additionally, GRSE aims to revive some inactive facilities and plans to lease dry docks from other agencies to boost its production capacity to 28 ships by the end of 2025.
As of March 31, 2025, GRSE’s order book totaled ₹22,680 crore, reflecting a robust demand despite a record revenue of ₹5,075 crore in FY25. This significant revenue underscores the company’s competitive position in the maritime sector.
The West Bengal government is actively seeking to attract investment in the defense manufacturing arena and is considering the establishment of a dedicated industrial park for defense. This strategy aligns with GRSE’s expansion efforts and the region’s potential to become a hub for defense-related manufacturing.
This initiative marks a strategic development for GRSE, enhancing its capabilities and reinforcing its commitment to meeting increasing market demands.
