The Indian government is actively monitoring the escalating situation in the Middle East, according to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He emphasized that all necessary measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of seafarers and maritime assets amid ongoing military conflicts. The region is currently experiencing heightened tensions, particularly following the recent killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which has intensified hostilities involving US and Israeli forces.
On Tuesday, Sonowal chaired a review meeting to evaluate the security environment in the Persian Gulf and its implications for Indian maritime interests. He reassured that the government is in constant communication with relevant national and international agencies to respond promptly to any developments. The minister highlighted the government’s commitment to the welfare of Indian seafarers and maritime stakeholders.
In light of the escalating military actions, the Directorate General of Shipping reported that at least three Indian seafarers aboard foreign-flagged vessels were killed, with one injured. An advisory has been issued for maritime operators to carefully assess voyage-specific risks, particularly as military tensions threaten key trade routes in the region. The ministry is prepared to extend operational, diplomatic, and humanitarian support to safeguard Indian vessels and personnel.
