India is accelerating its shift to clean maritime energy, with major ports transforming into hubs for green hydrogen production, bunkering, and export, announced Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, during the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai. The nation has declared over 12 million tonnes of green hydrogen e-fuel capacity, aiming to establish its ports as essential links in global clean energy trade.

Sonowal also highlighted a ₹69,725 crore ($8 billion) investment to enhance shipbuilding and the broader maritime ecosystem, aimed at positioning India among the top five maritime nations by 2047. Additionally, ₹19,989 crore is earmarked for the Shipbuilding Development Scheme, supported by the Maritime Development Fund and Sagarmala Finance Corporation.

India is rapidly emerging as a key player in the global green hydrogen market, with production costs for green ammonia dropping to $571 per tonne, making it competitive internationally. The country aims for 60% of major ports’ energy consumption to come from renewables by 2030 and targets a significant electrification of vessels and vehicles.

Amidst these initiatives, major investments were announced for the development of Vadhavan Port, including ₹53,000 crore from Adani Ports. Vadhavan is anticipated to be India’s largest container port, capable of handling 298 million metric tonnes annually.
