New Delhi: India’s maritime sector has taken a significant step forward with Cochin Shipyard Limited launching its new Industry 4.0-ready plate cutting machine. This advancement aligns with the country’s vision for digital transformation in shipping infrastructure. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed the machine’s operational status in response to inquiries from Rajya Sabha members.
In addition, the Ministry has initiated the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), which aims to decarbonize tugboat operations at major Indian ports. This phased initiative will replace traditional diesel-powered tugs with hybrid and fully electric alternatives, enhancing environmental sustainability and fuel efficiency.
To bolster domestic shipbuilding, the government amended the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy in August 2023, offering 30% financial support for vessels using green fuels like methanol and hydrogen. Vessels with hybrid or fully electric propulsion can receive 20% assistance.
Furthermore, the Harit Nauka guidelines have been introduced to encourage eco-friendly technologies in inland waterway vessels. These reforms are part of India’s broader strategy to enhance the share of green vessels in its fleet while promoting sustainable innovation in ship construction, reflecting a commitment to cleaner and more resilient maritime operations.
